L and U-Shaped Curved Stair Lift Measurement Guide

Measuring for a curved stair lift is essentially the same as measuring for a straight stair lift. In most cases, the only difference is measuring the landing(s). The total length of your curved rail will vary greatly depending on whether you decide to install your stair lift on the inside or outside of your staircase. Keep in mind that AmeriGlide stair lifts are capable of being installed on the same side of a banister and also on a side where there is not a wall.

step 1Step 1: Stand at the top of your first set of stairs and extend the tape measure down to the landing. The tape measure should be resting on each stair, without bending. Record the measurement from the edge of the top stair to the bottom landing.

step 2Step 2: Measure the distance from the edge of the first, bottom stair and the edge of the top stair that you measured from in Step 1.

step 3Step 3: Measure the width of the stairs from one side to the other.

step 4Step 4: Measure from the edge of the bottom stair to the wall. If there is a door on the side that you plan on installing the stair lift, measure to the nearest side of that door.

step 5Step 5: Measure the height of one individual stair.

Step 6: Measure the length of one individual stair.

Step 7: Measure the diagonal distance from the edge of one stair to the edge of the next stair.

step 8Step 8: Measure from the top step to the nearest door, wall or other obstruction at the top of the stairs.

Step 9: Repeat Steps 1-8 for each set of stairs.

For a U-shaped staircase, skip to Step 11.

step 10Step 10: For an L-shaped staircase, measure the length and width of each landing. For most staircases there will only be one landing, but if your staircase has multiple landings, we will need the measurements for each.

Your measurements should be complete for an L-shaped staircase.
step 11Step 11: For a U-shaped staircase, measure the width of the interior wall that your stairs wrap around.

step 12Step 12: Standing on the landing, measure the distance from the outside wall to the opposite edge of the interior wall that your stairs wrap around.

step 13Step 13: Measure from the edge of the interior wall that you used in Step 12 to the  opposite outside wall that you used in Step 12.

Your measurements should be complete for a U-shaped staircase.
